According to data released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), there will be 17.3 lakh new cancer cases in India and an estimated 8.8 lakhs deaths by the year 2020. Breast, cervix, and lung cancers are the most prevalent across the country. The National Cancer Registry Program launched by the ICMR has been trying to map an age-wise gender-based demographic profile of cancer patients in India. Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh are the worst-affected states with patients mostly suffering from oral and lung cancers due to the consumption of tobacco.

New Cancer Cases on the Rise in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh has been ranked among one of the worst-affected states in South India with 159,696 cases of cancer registered in 2016 alone. The numbers are on the rise, especially those of female patients in the state, suffering from breast and cervical cancers that can be easily diagnosed and are preventable. Regular medical check-ups and timely screening can significantly help in reducing the number of deaths from these cancers. Further, there needs to be aware regarding seeking medical care at the right time.

Development of New Cancer Hospitals in Vijayawada

Though the number of new cancer cases is on the rise in Andhra Pradesh, there are not enough diagnostic centres and hospitals to provide early screening and advanced medical care to patients. The state government in partnership with corporates has been investing in the development of a number of cancer centres in and around Vijayawada. Further, the Andhra Pradesh government has extended the Aarogyasri healthcare scheme to 150 hospitals including cancer care centres to help beneficiaries avail cost-effective medical care. Several cancer support groups have also been started in the city to offer a platform for cancer patients, their families, care providers, and doctors to exchange stories and motivate each other. These groups are particularly helpful for patients to make informed decisions about treatment procedures.
